Variety Show

The 2018 Highcrest Variety Show, produced by Youth Connection and sponsored by the Wilmette Optimist Club is almost here & Winter Break is the perfect time for kids to be creative and work on their acts.  Prefer to work backstage as a crew member?  We need you too!

Come take part in Shining Bright, and perform live for your friends and family. You can sing, dance, juggle, do gymnastics, perform a skit or comedy, solo or with a group. This year, a professional director, Ty Perry, will work with students and direct the show.

The Show is Friday, Jan. 26th, and rehearsals begin Jan. 9th.

Variety Show FAQ

What is the Youth Connection Variety Show?
YCVS is a live, short act, variety show. Students sing, dance, juggle, do gymnastics, stand up comedy, magic, play music as part of a group or solo, and/or perform a skit.

Who can be in the show?
Only Highcrest Middle School students can participate in the show (5th & 6th graders).

How do I sign up my HMS student for the Variety Show?
Your child will need to be registered and sign up for rehearsal dates. Payment for registration is $20, which includes the cast/crew t-shirt and can be made here.

Are there auditions?
There is no need to audition. Everyone who registers is allowed to participate. However, the director must approve lyrics and content to ensure acts are school appropriate.

Can my HMS student participate without performing?
Yes, crew is limited to 18 students this year.

Do crew members audition?
No. Crew members reserve their spot on sign up genius and by completing the registration form and making payment online.  First come, first served. We are accepting 18 crew members this year. Crew members will need to attend both tech rehearsals at WJHS on January 22nd and 23rd (from 3:35-7:30 pm)and dress rehearsal on January 25th at WJHS from 3:40-7:30 pm along with the two shows on Friday, January 26th. The timing of the shows will be announced once we have an estimate of the number of performers and the show run time.

When are rehearsals?
There are two weeks of regular rehearsals and one week of tech and dress rehearsals, culminating in the show on Friday January 26th. Reserve your rehearsal dates here.  Please check the location of each rehearsal carefully as they vary from day to day.

What do they need to have a spot in the Variety Show?
There is a time limit of 1 min 30 seconds for each act. Bring your idea, music, all act participants and any instruments needed to the first rehearsal. The act does not need to be polished. Music must be appropriate and approved by the director.

What if we are a band with equipment?
Each band must bring their own equipment. Performers are responsible for bringing their own props.

CD or digital. Students can use their iPads; however if music needs to be purchased the school has requested using a gift card to buy music. The student can provide music on a flash drive, iPhone, or iPad.

How many rehearsals will there be for the cast?
Cast members will need to attend 4 rehearsals total (reserve your rehearsal dates here) – 1 rehearsal on Rehearsal Week 1, 1 rehearsal on Rehearsal Week 2, tech rehearsal on either January 22, 2018 or January 23, 2018 depending on which act the student is in, and dress rehearsal on January 25 from 3:35-7:30 p.m. Everyone needs to attend dress rehearsal on January 25th from 3:35- 7:30pm.

Where are rehearsals located?
The locations for rehearsals during Week 1 and Week 2 are on the Rehearsal Sign Up Genius.  Please check the location of your rehearsal carefully, as the location varies from day to day.
Tech rehearsals and dress rehearsal are in the auditorium at WJHS.

When is the actual Variety Show?
Friday, January 26, 2018. There are two shows, and the times will be scheduled once the number of acts and run length of the show is determined. Cast and Crew will need to arrive right after school and stay until the end of the second show.

Is there a fee?
There is a $20.00 participation fee which includes registration and a Cast/Crew t-shirt. You can register/pay here.

When do the tickets go on sale?
The week of the show tickets will be on sale for $7.00/person at the door the day of the shows January 26, 2018.

How many shows?
There are two shows at times TBA. The first show will start at 4:30 p.m. Shows are approximately 1 1/2 hours in length.

Do I need to send snacks or dinner for dress rehearsal?
Please pack a snack, dinner and water bottle as this will be a long rehearsal. There is no eating in the auditorium, but students will be given an opportunity to eat during a break in rehearsal.

Do I need to send snacks or dinner the day of the show?
No we will provide a pizza dinner between shows. We will make sure there is gluten free pizza available. More information to follow. For rehearsals, there is no eating in the auditorium so please give your performer or crew member a quick snack before coming into rehearsals if needed.

Can my HMS student participate without performing?
Yes! We need a good crew! Crew is limited to 18 and needs to attend rehearsals and dress rehearsal during Tech week (January, 22,23,25 from 3:35-7:30) and both shows on Friday, January 26th.  If your student would like to participate in crew, please sign up here.

How can I help?
If your child is registered for the show you will need to sign up to volunteer through the signup genius link. Each participant MUST have at least one parent volunteer for at least ONE shift, otherwise he/she will be unable to participate. Thank you in advance! The show could not happen without your generous help!
